The Arrival

When I look out the window now, the garden no longer feels suspended in winter. Something has shifted.

The daffodils are fully open, their yellow faces turned upward like small solar panels gathering light. The ornamental plum trees are dusted in pale pink blossoms, soft against the still-cool sky. The saucer magnolias — always dramatic — are starting to unfurl their thick petals in slow motion, as if they know we’ve been waiting.

Spring does not arrive all at once. It arrives in signals.

Long before we see flowers, the earth has already begun its quiet recalibration. Soil temperatures inch upward. Microbial life stirs. Fungal networks resume their subtle trade routes. Roots that have been dormant begin to pulse again with stored carbohydrates. The biological clock embedded in every cell — plant and human alike — responds not to the date on the calendar, but to light. Photoperiod lengthens. The angle of the sun changes. Hormones shift.

Sap rises. Energy moves.

For millennia, humans have paid attention to this moment. The spring equinox will be here in a few weeks, but nature is waking up to this new season already. Spring has been marked across cultures as a threshold — a hinge point between darkness and light. The Persians celebrate Nowruz. Ancient agricultural societies aligned planting rituals with the lengthening day. In the Christian calendar, resurrection is placed here — not in the dead of winter, but in the greening of the earth. It is not accidental. The land teaches the metaphor first.

Resurrection is not just a religious spectacle. It is deeply embedded in the biological clock.

It is bulbs pushing through cold mud. It is magnolia buds swelling through frost. It is the invisible labor beneath the soil surface finally expressing itself above ground.

And if we are paying attention, something similar happens in us as well.

There is a biological time that runs deeper than our schedules. After months of contracted light, our nervous systems respond to brightness. Cortisol patterns adjust. Serotonin shifts. We step outside a little longer. We breathe differently. Even our posture changes when warmth returns.

We are seasonal creatures pretending to be mechanical ones.

The garden reminds me every year that dormancy is not death. It is preparation. The sugars stored in last season’s leaves fuel this season’s bloom. What looked barren in January was simply gathering strength out of sight.

This is why tending a living system matters. It trains the eye to see beyond appearances. It teaches patience in February and celebration in March. It anchors us to something older than productivity cycles and quarterly goals. The soil keeps its own time.

Spring is not loud where I live. It is incremental. A blossom here. A green shoot there. A morning when the air no longer bites.

But once it begins, it does not stop.

Step outside today if you can. Notice one sign of emergence — a bud, a bloom, a subtle greening. Ask yourself: What in me has been quietly preparing during winter? What stored energy is ready to rise?

Spring is not something we chase. It is something we align with.
