The Photon Connection
Light Is the Real Master Variable for plants and humans
The Understory – Cultivation Science & Conscious Growing
All life is solar powered.
Plants and humans both need adequate light to thrive.
There’s a reason why this time of year, in the northern hemisphere, seasonal affective disorder tends to spike.
Adequate light and optimal spectrum is critical for plants and people.
When we first launched our cultivation facility in 2015, we didn’t know what lighting system we were going to bet the farm on—LED or HPS.
After assessing the options, and a we partnered with Fluence Bioengineering and their balanced spectrum LED. We got a great partner in Fluence, but more than that we got a much deeper understanding of light.
Our entire cultivation model was built around that LED technology and the science of photon delivery. We went down the rabbit hole—spectral curves, DLI, canopy penetration, photosynthetic efficiency, chlorophyll response curves.
But in the end, it all came down to one core metric:
PPFD — Photosynthetic Photon Flux Density
The number of photons striking a square meter of leaf surface every second.
In plain English: How much usable light your plant actually receives.
Every plant has a PPFD “sweet spot” depending on genetics and growth stage—seedling, veg, flower. Get the photon budget wrong, and the plant will let you know pretty quickly.
And here’s the part most home growers—and nearly every houseplant parent—miss:
Most Plant Problems Aren’t Water Problems. They’re Light Problems.
Not enough light is the silent killer of plant vitality. I know! I have killed many houseplants because I want put them in the perfect spot for a gorgeous plant but it has absolutely abysmal light.
So the plant limps along for 6 months and dies.
Here’s the cascade:
Under-lighting → reduced photosynthesis → reduced nutrient uptake → slower respiration → “mysterious decline.”
People think the issue is watering. Or they think it’s lack of fertilizer.
But their plants are actually starving for light.
A plant that isn’t receiving enough photons cannot:
- Maintain chlorophyll density
- Move nutrients through the vascular system
- Transpire efficiently
- Build structural sugars
- Defend itself against pathogens or stress
Dial in the light for your plants, and suddenly most of the “mysterious” plant issues evaporate.
This is the cultivation equivalent of fixing the correct problem.

Why Soil Love Makes Light More Powerful
This is the part most people never connect:
Light only becomes effective when the soil web is balanced and alive.
Your plant takes photons and converts them into chemical energy—but that energy is only useful if the soil has the biological and mineral structure to support it.
We use Flowerbird Soil Love to amplify the “light effect” in three key ways:
1. Humic Acids — Open the Vault
Humics increase nutrient chelation and uptake efficiency, meaning the plant can do more with the photons it receives.
2. Kelp — Enhances Chlorophyll Density
Kelp’s natural cytokinins and micronutrients increase chlorophyll production, boosting the plant’s ability to harvest light.
3. Fish Protein — Fuel for Growth
A slow-release amino profile that helps the plant build structure in response to increased light intensity.
Light is the spark. Soil Love is the engine.
The Human connection
This time of year, many people feel heavier, slower, or strangely unmotivated — and we give it a hundred psychological explanations. But often the cause is biochemical: seasonal affective disorder is, at its core, a light-deficiency problem.
When sunlight drops below a critical threshold, the human body produces less serotonin, disrupts melatonin rhythms, and destabilizes the circadian system.
The result is the human version of a low-PPFD environment: sluggish metabolism, poor emotional regulation, and a sense of internal “root rot.” Clinical studies show that bright-light therapy—literally increasing photon exposure—improves symptoms in up to 70% of patients, underscoring one truth plants have always understood: light is nourishment. Plants wilt without it. Humans do too.
How to Use This Practically (Quick Guide)
For plants:
- Move your plants closer to the brightest window
- Rotate them weekly if needed
- Use full-spectrum grow lights in winter
- Increase light first before changing watering patterns
- Add Flowerbird, Soil Love weekly to harmonize soil biology with higher photon load
For your life:
- Look at the light source—your inputs, your awareness, your focus.
- Strengthen the structure—your routines
- Regulate the water—your emotional rhythms
Everything grows toward the light.
Everything collapses without it
If you take nothing else from this:
Fix the light and the plant fixes itself.
And that’s the deeper truth:
When you increase the clarity in your life, the rest of the system begins to self-correct. Let the photons in.
The rest will follow.
